Preparing Your Pool for the Upcoming Hard Freeze

With colder temperatures heading our way, I’d like to share some important steps to protect your swimming pool and equipment. A little preparation goes a long way in preventing costly damage once the freeze rolls in. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Keep Water Moving

    • Run Your Pump Continuously: Circulating water is less likely to freeze. If your system has a freeze guard, make sure it’s activated and functioning correctly.

    • Check Your Waterfalls and Water Features: If possible, leave them running to ensure water keeps flowing.

  2. Maintain Proper Water Levels

    • Avoid Low Water: Make sure your pool’s water level is at the mid-skimmer mark. This ensures proper circulation through the skimmers and reduces the risk of freezing in pipes.

  3. Insulate and Protect Equipment

    • Cover Exposed Pipes: Use insulating materials such as foam sleeves or towels secured with tape to protect exposed plumbing.

    • Heater and Filter Care: Double-check your pool heater and filter to ensure they’re in good working order. If you have a heater, running it at a low setting can add an extra layer of protection.

  4. Balance Your Pool Chemistry

    • Test the Water: Make sure pH, alkalinity, and chlorine levels are stable. Balanced water chemistry helps keep your pool clear and less susceptible to freezing or damage.

    • Shock if Necessary: Adding pool shock (if your levels are off) can help maintain a cleaner pool during the freeze.

  5. Remove or Secure Accessories

    • Detached Equipment: Store any removable components, like pool cleaners or vacuums, in a safe, dry place.

    • Clear the Deck: Put away items such as pool toys, floats, and furniture to protect them from the harsh weather.

  6. Monitor and Adjust

    • Check Regularly: Keep an eye on your pool and equipment over the next few days. Clear away ice or snow that accumulates on the equipment pad.

    • Stay Connected: If you notice anything unusual—strange noises, malfunctioning equipment, or unexpected freezing—reach out to me right away.

Following these steps should keep your pool in great shape throughout the cold snap. If you have any questions or need a hand winterizing, don’t hesitate to give me a call or send an email. I’m here to help!

Stay warm and safe!
